Welcome to our brief overview of the Jazz program! You will find on this page basic information for all levels of dance experience. Please do not hesitate to contact our Jazz department via our support center for any additional questions or concerns!
If this is your first visit, please read our project introduction first!
GENERAL
Our Jazz department represents one of our two project's so-called Broadway programs with many additional free time activities, like play / musical evenings in your city or trips to NYC. It is one of two department which primarily admits dancers of the advanced level. There are no restrictions regarding age or physical limitation. Members of this department dance depending on their level in one of the following 3 groups:
- Intermediate [INT]
- Advanced Intermediate [AIN]
- Professional [PRO]
Those 3 digits in brackets will later appear in your member ID and after a while may change to a higher level as you're taking your career to a next level. You can select in your application in which group you would like to dance. However, for the PRO-level
you would need to provide additional information (resumee, etc.). After your first workshop and recommendations from your instructor, you may change your level. If you plan to apply to the Advanced Dance Team (ADT), you have to be in one of the latter two groups.
THE WORKSHOPS
Workshops will take place at selected dance studios in NYC as well as at dance institutions all over the US and usually take around 2 hours in the evening on weekdays and on a few weekends. INT and AIN members will from time to time share workshops. Sometimes professionals will be also invited to those shared meetings, but usually have their own training times. The NY Dance Project invites from time to time guest instructors for workshops - internationally renowned directors/choreographers, who have worked on Broadway, Off-Broadway, Regional and International Theater projects. This can be very helpful for the learning process.
You have to bring your own shoes and proper clothing! This means for example wearing tight-fitting clothing. [Jeans are not recommended] Quick note: There will be no catering service unlike at our ADT meetings.
No matter what kind of Jazz dance experiences you have - traditional, lyrical to contemporary - we're interested in all styles! (for more info, see below) On our workshops you can either rehearse a certain
program in small groups or, if interested in applying to the distinguished Advanced
Dance Team (ADT), you may present any choreography, from your favorite music video to pieces of your beloved musical, anything you like! It is your choice if you'd need certain music. Otherwise, we'll help you out. It's gonna be a work-together atmosphere, which is our basic rule for all workshops! Over the year, there'll be many different workshops offered. -- You will receive all details via e-mail as soon as workshops or auditions are scheduled in your area.
